Celebrating Ireland's Presidency of the EU
This silver proof €10 coin was issued to celebrate Ireland’s Presidency of the European Union during the first six months of 2004 and the Enlargement of the European Union. The coin marks the accession of the ten new countries to the European Union and also pays tribute to Ireland’s presidency. The principal design feature on the collector’s side of the coin is by Irish artist Emmet Mullins. He has represented Europe and its new members as a swan nesting on ten eggs, with an overall style that recalls traditional Irish art. On the national side of the coin designer Paul Regan has depicted the names of the ten accession countries in their official languages. The familiar, traditionally decorated, Irish harp stands boldly at the centre.
