€10 Silver Proof Coin 2013
Marking the 50th Anniversary of JFK's Visit to Ireland
In conjunction with the Department of Finance, the Central Bank of Ireland is issuing a limited edition silver coin to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the historic visit to Ireland by President John F. Kennedy to Ireland in 1963. This historic silver coin has been struck to the highest Proof quality. The reverse of the coins features an iconic portrait of President Kennedy, the first President of the United States to visit Ireland, and the first to appear on an Irish coin. The portrait is by renowned Irish sculptor Tom Fitzgerald. The obverse of the coin bears the Irish harp. The coin comes in elegant presentation case and is accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity testifying to the low issue limits and the rarity of this numismatic event.
This commemorative coin issue is strictly limited to only 15,000 pieces. When John F. Kennedy became the first US President to visit Ireland in the summer of 1963 he was given a rapturous welcome. President Kennedy was returning to the place from where Patrick Kennedy, his great-grandfather, had set sail for America back in 1848 during the potato famine. Throughout the emotional four-day tour crowds flocked to catch a glimpse of President Kennedy and the streets were packed with thousands of well-wishers waving both Irish and American flags. President Kennedy’s tour included a visit to his ancestral home in Dunganstown, County Wexford, a speech in front of the Irish Parliament in Dublin and a visit to the port of New Ross where his great-grandfather had set sail for America in 1848. Only months later President Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. His visit to Ireland, however, has remained a landmark event in recent Irish history.
TOM FITZGERALD, sculptor, took early retirement from his position as Head of the Sculpture Department in Limerick School of Art & Design in 2000 to pursue his own work. He has exhibited widely in Ireland and also in Europe and the US. His work practise includes sculpture, drawing, installation and public art projects. He was elected to membership of Aosdana in 2001. He lives and works in County Limerick.
