European Musicians: Honouring the Great Irish Tenor John McCormack
John McCormack is considered by many to be Ireland’s greatest ever singer. Born in Athlone, County Westmeath in 1884, his long singing career spanned an era of great change in musical performance, he was a world renowned opera singer, a concert recitalist and a prolific recording artist. John McCormack was one of the most popular singers in the world during the early 20th century. He was particularly popular in the USA as well as in his homeland and he received many distinguished honours and awards. In 1928, he received the title of Papal Count from Pope Pius XI in recognition of his work for Catholic charities.
These historic €10 collector coins are beautifully minted and are a fitting tribute to honour the great Irish tenor, John McCormack. The coin is issued as part of the 2014 Europa Coin Programme celebrating “European Musicians”. It is struck to the highest proof quality in sterling silver. The coin issue is limited to only 8,000. The evocative and nostalgic design of this Silver Proof coin was created by Michael Guilfoyle. It depicts John McCormack in his typical impassioned singing style. Theatre curtains and an old record player reference the singer’s popularity in both concert and recording performances.
