Marking the issue of the first Euro denominated notes and coins
1 January 2002, marks the issue into circulation of the first euro denominated notes and coins. This currency will circulate freely throughout the twelve monetary union member states. The eight euro coins will each have one common side, designed by Luc Luycx from Belgium. The other side will feature a national design unique to each individual country, surrounded by the twelve stars of the European Union. The harp has appeared on all Irish coins since the first issue of national coinage in 1928. The first Irish euro coins continue a long tradition of Irish currency featuring the familiar harp. To commemorate this historic occasion the first ever Irish euro coins are in a colourfully illustrated presentation folder. This coin set is designed to preserve the past and celebrate the future.
